Mooligaimani Siddha Healthcare
Vision
The Journey
Dr. A R Kannappar belonged to a hereditary Siddha physicians’ family popularly known as Kaapukara Vaidyars – meaning Royal physicians, in Arcot region. His grandfather Vaidyar Ayyavoo Mudaliyar and father Vaidyar Ramakrishna Mudaliyar were well known for treating skin diseases and their Nadi examination skills. Dr. Kannappar had great passion for Siddha medicine even though the colonial and post-colonial period was a great set back to the system.
He moved to Vellore and started his humble Murugan Vaidya Salai. Along with his practice, he wrote articles in Dinamani every week about native herbs and their uses in a fascinating style which brought about a tremendous change among people and renewed the interest for native medicine. In 1964 he founded Mooligaimani, a Tamil monthly magazine dedicated for Siddha medicine. His writings were revolutionary during the times of Indian independence, which promoted the use of Swadesi medicine and contributed to the renaissance of Siddha medicine.
Soon Mooligaimani became a household magazine in every Tamil home for self-reliance with Siddha medicine, in a time when the western medicine wave took over people aggressively. After him Dr. Venkatesan carried the Siddha Vaidya tradition and continued to publish Mooligaimani, spreading awareness about Siddha medicine for decades till 2021. During his time, he contributed at large towards the social and structural development of the system.
He held several posts in government committees and was instrumental in establishing government policies and key educational institutions for Siddha medicine. He fought for the registration of 4000 hereditary Siddha Vaidyars and successfully completed the task. After serving the society and system for 5 generations, we proudly witness the widespread social awareness and acceptance of our native medicine despite several challenges. Today we are committed to taking Siddha medicine across the globe as our new mission.
Dr. K V Abirami (Siddha Physician), Dr. K V Balaji (Research and development), Dr. K V Ajitha Porkodi (Pathologist and Integrated medicine) now serve as ‘Team Modern Siddha’ carrying the baton forward.

The Journey
All my ancestral generations were my inspiration to learn Ayurveda. Being born into a Doctor’s family, I was also fascinated towards Moolika Vaidyam. After my schooling, I went up to my Guru Sri Deevi Bhargava Gopala Krishnama Charylu, learnt Ayurveda and secured the title of Vaidya Vidwaan. In the early days of my career, I undertook apprenticeship under my Guru Sri Deevi Bhargava Gopala Krishnama Charylu. Later, I came to my native place and started practising. Till my father’s generation, the medication and treatment used to be a door-to-door service.
Later, the situation changed and I started a clinic – Sri Srinivasa Clinic, in the year of 1982. Initially, I was using only Ayurveda for treatment. Later, the medication took a paradigm shift. I got trained in Allopathy and started practising both Ayurveda and Allopathy. I am the Vice-president of the Universal Society for Ayurveda and I am also a member of IMCOPS and Sri Ram Mohana Ayurveda.
As I give importance to Ayurveda, I give medication for infertility and long-term chronic diseases. I have seen wonderful recoveries and gained goodwill in no time at my place. By using Moolika Vaidyam, I have continued doing Pumsamana Prakriya which got me phenomenal results.

My best memory
- When I had 5 years of experience, I got a case of Tetanus, wherein the patient was in a very scary condition. I used only Ayurveda to treat the patient and successfully cured him with just oil massages and steam baths with Rasa Aushadhas. With the success of this case, people started laying greater trust on Ayurveda at my place.
- I have cured consanguineous marriage-related diseases and have been successful.

My Gurus
My Guru Sri Deevi Bhargava Gopala Krishnama Charylu. I will remain indebted to him for my entire life. I have learnt from him not just Ayurveda but the way of life, the way he treats everyone, Swamy Kainkaram in temple, making of medicines, etc.
Guru Sri Paramkusam Sreenivasa Charylu. He is my father-in-law. I learnt diagnosing diseases from him. He taught me yoga for a better life, how to cook medicines and use of simple remedies for a healthy life.
Guru Pandita Sri Deevi Gopala Charyulu, is an inspiration and Wikipedia for me. I refer Madhava Nidhanam for every solution in critical cases that I come across.
Guru Sri Deevi Gopala Charyulu, MBBS Kankipadu. He taught me allopathy and gave me lot of advice for the cure of critical ailments.
Guru Sri Deevi Murali Gopala Charyulu. I learnt Agamam from him.
Last but not least, my Cousin and my fellow student and colleague, Sri Deevi Chinmaya Radha Krishna, who always stood by my side in my thick and thin.

The Journey
I started my journey in Ayurveda inspired by my ancestors. I was born in the dynasty of Pandit Deevi Goplachacharylu and am the grandson of Dr. Deevi Lakshmanacharylu. When I entered Venkata Ramana Ayurveda College (Chennai) for the first time in 1989, I felt like I entered a vintage college that was established 125 years ago. Later, I established my own dream hospital in 1998 with the aim to provide low cost and effective treatment to patients from challenged socioeconomic backgrounds.
I have had success with thousands of medical and surgical cases. My key areas of expertise are panchakarmas and anorectal surgeries. My major challenges have been use of innovative techniques in treating different kinds of fistula.

Vision
The Journey
In our family of Lavgankar Vaidyas, the ancient tradition providing Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment has been practiced over many generations now. The 1668 edition of the classic Sanskrit textbook “Yogaratnakar” on Ayurveda mentions that the oldest edition of this text was found to be in the possession of one “Vaidya Harbhatta Lavgankar”. This establishes that the tradition of Ayurvedic practice has been in our family at least for 400 years, and it continues through this day.
Our family hails from the town of “Vaidya Lavgan” near the city of Jaigad in Ratnagiri district of Konkan in the state of Maharashtra. Because every house in this town had at least one Vaidya, the town was named “Vaidya Lavgan”.
The speciality of Lavgankar Vaidyas has been diagnosis by Naadi-pariksha, followed by treatment of particularly difficult-to-treat ailments and diseases. It is because of this fame that had spread far and wide, the Peshwas invited Vaidya Daji Bhatt Lavgankar to Pune who subsequently established his practice there.
Son of Vaidya Daji Bhatt, Vaidya Narayan Bhatt, and after Vaidya Narayan Bhatt, his son Bal Shastri, carried the tradition of Ayurveda practice forward. Bal Shastri became such a well-known Vaidya of the nineteenth century due to his Nadi-pariksha based on diagnosis and treatment that he was honoured with the title of “Pranacharya”. His students, Vaidya Ganesh Shastri Joshi, Vaidya Purushottam Shastri Nanal, Vaidya Hirlekar and many others gained fame and continued the tradition of Ayurvedic practice in each of their respective families. The significance of Vaidya Bal Shastri Lavgankar’s work, impact and eminence is reflected in the special award that Vaidya Khadiwale Vaidyak Samshodhan Foundation periodically announces in his name.
Even in the period of waning interest in Ayurveda after passing away of Vaidya Bal Shastri, Vaidya Bapusaheb alias Laxman Balwant and Vaidya Dattatreya Balwant alias Kakasaheb Lavgankar carried on the family tradition through excellent treatment that they provided: Vaidya Bapusaheb via his mastery over herbal medicines and Vaidya Kakasaheb via his expertise on formulated Rasaushadhi.
After these two stalwarts, Vaidya Purushottam Laxman alias Balasaheb Lavgankar continued the tradition of Ayurvedic treatment and integrated it with Yoga treatment. For this purpose he founded the “Yoga Vidyabhyas” institution in Pune. It was through the guidance of this institution that Nootan Marathi Vidyalay School won the award for Suryanamaskar competition for thirteen straight years.
Our Nana alias Vaidya Chandrakant Dattatreya Lavgankar carried forward the tradition after Balasaheb till date. Because he grew up in the dual tradition of Ayurveda and Yoga, it can be said that they became a part of his identity, and his lifelong contribution in these two fields has been very impactful.
Nana studied Ayurveda ever since he was in the 8th standard. He passed his University examination in Ayurveda with the first rank!
Owing to the range of his contributions in the various fields, he was associated with, he has received many awards among which are:
- Maharshi Annasaheb Patwardhan Vaidyakeeya Puraskar, 2011
- Sharngadhar Pharmacy’s Punyavaidya Puraskar, 2011
- Jeevan-gaurav Puraskar for his work in the field of yoga, 2011
After Vaidya Chandrakant Lavgankar, his son Vaidya Laxman, daughter in law Vaidya Gargi followed his path in Ayurved tradition. Sukhada, daughter of Vaidya Chandrakant and Mrs. Lalita took the responsibility of Ayurvedic medical shop ‘Paurnima’.
