The Journey

I joined BAMS in the first batch at Venkataramana Ayurveda College. Without any struggle, three months after internship, I got an AMO government posting. Single handed, right from scratch. I started an Ayurveda wing in the Nagapattinam hospital. Later, I became a consultant in ITCOT and TIDCo for developing Ayurveda industries. I resigned after 11 years of service in the government.

I then started INMP TIDCo and a French nationals company. It was a challenge to get 27 licenses in three states for 27 products with essential oils. I also was consulting editor of Ayurmedline since 2000. I was a GMP consultant for the Department of AYUSH In Hyderabad for the entire state of A.P. I was the youngest guru of Rastriya Ayurveda Vidhyapeet Delhi for Tamilnadu. I started APAS and was its general secretary since 2014, in Singapore, and conducted three International seminars with Indian High Commission.

Vamsha Bhushan Vaidya T V Narayanan Varier

K S Varier’s Ashtanga Ayurvedics (Pvt.) Ltd.
Vision
Ashtanga visualizes a healthy society adopting Ayurvedic living concepts, free from lifestyle related ailments.
The Journey

The legacy of Ashtanga’s Ayurvedic Heritage dates back to the 1820s as far as has been traced. The oldest known member was a Palace physician to the Rulers of Kodungallore Kovilakam (a small kingdom near Trichur in Kerala, India).  His name was Vaidyan Easwara Varier. He was an expert in Sanskrit, Astrology and Ayurveda. An unquestioned authority, he was very powerful and had a big say with the Rulers. His was considered the last word whenever anybody fell ill.  He passed away in the late 1800s when he had crossed the age of 90.  He was the grand uncle of our Founder, Aryavaidyan K S Varier.

During his last days, to continue the legacy, he educated his nephew, Sri Krishna Varier, who later became the Palace physician. Krishna Varier was again an unquestioned authority with the Palace inmates and the public of Kodungallore. He had learnt Ayurveda, Astrology and Sanskrit from the very eminent Vaidyan Easwara Varier himself. He formulated many different medicines out of the vast experience gained. Sri Krishna Varier died at the age of 97 in 1983.

Vaidyan Krishna Varier was the eldest brother of our Founder. Another brother Vaidyan Achutha Varier was also a Physician who studied Sanskrit, Astrology and Ayurveda. He also learnt Tharka and Vyakarana or Logic. He was more academic and also joined his brother Vaidyan Krishna Varier in Kodungallore. Towards the end of the tenure of Krishna Varier as Palace physician, the Rulers decided to abolish the post of the Palace physician. So Vaidyan Achutha Varier could not inherit the honour. He later turned to Sanskrit literature. He has written some unique works in Sanskrit, one of which has been selected as the text for Post Graduate students of Fine Arts in Kerala Kalamandalam.

The third brother was Aryavaidyan K S Varier, our Founder. He was primarily educated in Sanskrit, Tharka, and Vyakarana. He also had the opportunity to learn from both the elder brothers. He later joined the Paatashala at Kottakkal under the Doyen of Ayurveda – Vaidyaratnam P S Varier of Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, Kerala, India. He completed his four and a half year course in Ayurveda in 1933 and came to Trichy in 1936 to establish Ashtanga Ayurveda Sala.  During the intermediate three years, he learnt Astrology too.

My father had always taken me to the factory and the herbal garden right from the age of 5 years. The urge to show to the world, the greatness of this system infused with the thirst for knowledge keeps me entwined to the science of life.
My best memory
During the 1970s, the temple elephant of the Rockfort Temple, Trichy was diagnosed as having cancer and the veterinarians expressed their inability to treat the mammoth. The mahout was very unhappy and sought Aryavaidyan K S Varier for help as a last resort. K S Varier assessed the situation and prescribed certain medicines. All these medicines were then administered by him directly through food. He used to feed the mammoth daily for six months along with the medicines. To the surprise of all, the elephant lived a comfortable life for over 2 and half years and died thereafter due to some other problem.
My dream
A great responsibility rests on my shoulder today, of maintaining the high standards already set by my illustrious ancestors. I have to multiply the greatness in the coming years.

Vamsha Bhushan Dr. Supreeth Joyal Lobo

Balli Ayur Grama
Vision
To be a Centre of Excellence for Shuddha Ayurveda and to offer comprehensive, complete and holistic health to the aspirants.
The Journey

The Balli property is densely vegetated for several centuries with more than 800 species of identified and tagged trees. The Balli family has been known to be living here at least for the last five generations. This breathtakingly beautiful slice of an ecologically strategic tropical rain forest is part of the famous Western Ghats in southern India. Balli must have been a natural, intuitive and more than poetic choice for a family name, we believe, considering what you see all around you is trees and a galore of creepers reaching out to the heavens. Balli in the local language Kannada means a vine or a creeper. Etymology of the word can be traced back to the word Valli in Sanskrit language meaning the same. Apparently the Balli logo is also inspired by the idea of a tendril in a vine. You might have noticed that a tendril reaches out to find support for sustenance and growth for the plant – quietly and intuitively. Similarly, Balli Ayur Grama is one place where all can reach out and seek support for a sustainable, healthy and flourishing life ahead.

Dr Supreeth remembers his grandmother, herself a healer who practiced for close to 60 years, had devised some secret recipes which he now inherits. Tracking the forest paths in their backyard along with his grandmother, Dr Supreeth grew up discovering the magical world of herbs and healing.

My great grandfather was very close to nature and mother earth. He found a solution to every sickness in the lap of mother earth. Both cared for each other because at that time one could hardly find any hospital in the town. People had to walk miles to find a Vaidya. It took a lot of energy and time consumption; that is why they found in nature itself the best solution and turned to nature for every sickness.

Today, he is rightfully passing on this invaluable tradition to his 9 and 4 -year-old sons who are already familiar with a lot of the plants and trees in their forest-like backyard.

Vamsha Bhushan Vaidya Sanmathi Rao

Shubha Ayurvedic Centre, Bangalore
Vision
To make Ayurveda the main stream of medicine the way our ancestors dreamt it to be and the way it is meant to be.
The Journey

Shubha Ayurvedic Centre was started in 1995 by my parents Dr. V R Padmanabha Rao and Dr. Shubhankari P Rao. My father, Dr. V R Padmanabha Rao has had a lineage of Ayurveda in his forefathers. But taking it up as a medical practice was quite a huge step in those days when Ayurveda’s popularity was in question. During the 90’s period, the practice of western medicine gained momentum in India with the support of the British and modern education. The practitioners of Ayurveda medicine suffered a great loss of prestige against western claims of being a superior medical system. However, Ayurveda has successfully survived and flourished over these years of torture.

Dr. V R Padmanabha Rao and Dr. Shubhankari P Rao shouldered the responsibility of reviving the lost importance of Ayurveda by simply showing to the people the amazing results of Ayurvedic medicines. That is when they opened Amruth Ayurvedic Centre and Shubha Ayurvedic Centre. The glory of their aunthentic Ayurveda practice is well known. Continuous dedication to serve people and revive them of their ailments with authentic Ayurveda became their goal. The efforts did not go unnoticed. Their popularity reached new heights with even modern doctors consulting them with their health issues.

I remember as a child (12- 13 years) accompanying my mother to her clinic. Her daily activities of beginning the day with a Dhanvantari prayer with her staff, consulting patients, addressing their problems, writing medical articles to promote Ayurveda or getting prepared with case studies to present at medical conferences, are still fresh in my memories. One activity which is imprinted in my head is preparing medicines for her patients with dedication. These were the times when not all required medicines were available in the pharmacies, rather preparing them vigilantly made a huge impact and results spoke instantly.

As times went on and I had to select my career stream, my heart and soul had already opted Ayurveda. I started to read the science, understand the principles and it marveled me by the way it impacted my life and living. To practice Ayurveda is my dream and remains so, to learn to heal diseases and watch the joy Ayurveda provides is satisfying. My major uplift was marrying my husband, Dr Puneeth Kumar P. Our dreams, ideologies and dedication matched very well and together we opened Sriranga Ayurveda. Today, I am proud of the way we have successfully come up in practice. I saw the struggle my parents did when they practiced, but I also learnt that they enjoyed this growth that they always dreamt of.

Vision
The Indian System of Medicine is not just about traveling with the goal of curing diseases; we are well aware that this is a way of life. Accordingly, we are carrying out our treatment methods. In times to come, our goal will not only be to cure the diseases of mankind, but in the long-run, to educate people about disease-free approaches and guide them to wellness.
The Journey
We are successfully the 4th generation of Indian medicine practitioners. Each generation practiced different types of departments, not limiting themselves to the medical methods laid down by their forefathers. Because of my father’s broad vision, our family has more than 10 doctors who have studied the Indian system of medicine. We are very proud to dedicate our family to this Indian system of medicine.

4th Gen: Dr. M Raja Mohamed (2011-Present)

My inspiration
Even though all my forefathers worked in the field of siddha medicine, I was guided to study Ayurveda based on my father’s elaborate strategy. My father was well aware that instead of narrowing us down under one field, every child should choose to study each field and learn all the methods of medicine in the Indian medical system. Accordingly, I am proud to be the first Ayurvedic doctor in my family of medical heritage to be dedicated to Ayurvedic medicine.
My goal
I have carried on the continuous flow of this lamp which my forefathers have lighted, like a continuous race without stopping anywhere. My aim is to improve the development of this field of medicine and pass it on to the next generation.
Message to Youngsters
We already feel that the times ahead will be very challenging for global health. All these challenging situations have been entrusted to the young doctors of Indian Medicine. who have to use strategies as per the guidelines given by our Siddha’s & Acharya’s to handle all these challenging situations and save humanity. It is our prime duty to develop Indian medicine on par with modern medicine. I wish our young doctors realize that it is their duty to protect our tradition of Indian medicine from being destroyed.

Dr. Pathak Health and Wellness Centre
Vision
To serve the society and uplift Ayurveda with evidence based practice.
The Journey

The journey started in 1937 with my grandfather, Pandit Jamunadeen Pathak. He had learnt the medicinal uses of various herbs from his mother right from early childhood. He started treating needy persons at a very young age. He was an agriculturist, but his selfless devotion to serve the society made him treat hundreds of villagers every day, free of cost.

He transferred all his knowledge to my father, Vaidya Shyam Krishna Pathak. To make him a recognized Vaidya, he admitted him to state Ayurveda College, Lucknow to help him pursue his BAMS degree. My father graduated in 1968 and started practicing Ayurveda in his village at Uttar Pradesh. His better half Smt. Suman Pathak too supported him throughout her life.

In the year 1979 he got a central government job as a medical officer at New Delhi. After his retirement in 2004, he established Dr. Pathak Clinic at Dwarka, New Delhi. Later the clinic evolved into Dr. Pathak Health and Wellness centre at Dwarka, New Delhi. This is now managed by his elder son, Vaidya Avnish Pathak, BAMS, MS. Vaidya Shyam Krishna Pathak has four siblings Vaidya Avnish Pathak, Vaidya Pankaj Pathak, Madhu Pathak and Aradhna Pathak (the third generation of Vaidyas).

The Lineage

My inspiration
The legacy of my grandfather and then my father, made me take to Ayurveda. I joined Ayurveda by choice and not by force.
My best memory
It was a tough time when my parents were struggling to give us all comforts, but still my father was treating patients without charging a single rupee. He was the real hero who gave importance to moral values. Even during the COVID pandemic, he was successfully treating patients with Ayurveda medicines. He did not close his clinic during those days and used to see the patient almost whole day and night. At last he himself got infected with COVID and left this world in April, 2021.
My dream
To validate the concept of Ayurveda with modern research tools. To make youngsters understand Ayurveda as a holistic medicine and not just as a BAMS degree.

Vamsha Bhushan Vaidya N Narayanan Namboothiri

Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital & Research Centre, Koothattukulam
Vision
Our vision is to eradicate blindness completely and to be one of the most respected Ayurvedic treatment centres in the country, reputed for our authentic treatment procedures and service excellence.
The Journey
Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Group has its origin from the Nelliakattu Mana; a traditional family of Vaidyas in Koothattukulam which has been renowned for its treasure of knowledge in Ayurveda Shalakya Tantra and Visha Chikitsa. With the divine blessings of Sri Nelliakattu Bhagavathy, and Sri Thalikunnu Mahadeva, the century’s old expertise has been carried on from generation to generations. For the present generation, Sreedhareeyam stands for authenticity, expertise and patient care of the best quality; a place where Ayurveda is delivered in the most scientific way.
History & Struggles
Though the family has a history of 400 years, the beginning of present-day’s Sreedhareeyam was in 1931. Bramhasree Parameswaran Namboothiri started a branch of Sreedhary Ayurveda Vaidyasala in Koothattukulam, with its headquarters at Kurichithanam, a small village in the adjoining district, Kottayam. The family had a Pharmacy and raw drug store in Koothattukulam town. The medicines were manufactured at the Illam (residence) and were given to the patients. The doors were kept open to all the sick, needy and suffering. The family rendered their unmatched services without expecting anything in return. Like many other people, the family too struggled during the famine, post-independence, etc. Still, the services were continued with smiles and trust in Ayurveda as a natural system of medicine. Along with dedication and expertise, the goodwill of the beneficiaries contributed to the growth of Sreedhary and its transition to Sreedhareeyam. The family also has a history of association with Nagarjuna Vaidyasala, Thodupuzha for some time.
Success & Present Structure:

Sreedhareeyam had its humble beginning in 1999 as an eight bedded hospital set-up by Shri NP Narayanan Namboothiri and his younger brother, the late Dr. NPP Namboothiri. It started as an Ayurveda Hospital with Ophthalmology as a specialty. Those were the times when Ayurveda itself was not well recognized as a system of medicine across the globe. Ophthalmology in Ayurveda was not even considered a possibility of management and success. Late Dr NPP Namboothiri along with his elder brother Sri Narayanan Namboothiri was determined to deliver the best services in this rare field of Ayurveda. Their sincere efforts did not go in vain. Patients across the globe considered Sreedhareeyam as an assured destination for many rare eye diseases, which are not well addressed by modern medicine. The majority of the patients arrive after unsuccessful treatments even through modern medicine. It is not just their vision; it is their hope, time and value for Ayurveda.

The rapid progress of Sreedhareeyam in a short span is the result of teamwork, faith in Ayurveda and passion to render the services of traditional Ayurveda across the globe. Ancient treatment procedures are practiced and amalgamated with modern diagnostic methods. Along with NABH & ISO accreditation, Sreedhareeyam is also recognized as a Centre of Excellence by Dept. of AYUSH, Govt. of India. Govt. of Kerala, tourism department has accorded Ayur Diamond Certification to Sreedhareeyam.

With the passage of time, Sreedhareeyam has expanded its services in medicine manufacturing. With several unique patented products along with classical medicines, Sreedhareeyam’s Medicine Manufacturing Unit (Sreedhareeyam Farmherbs & Medicines) is one of the best with state-of-art manufacturing and packing facilities. The Quality control lab is accredited by NABL.

Mobile Bus Clinic is another initiative of the hospital to reach the masses. It is a fully equipped clinic on wheels with ultramodern facilities for consultation, optometry tests and pharmacy. Sreedhreeyam is active in knowledge sharing among Ayurveda fraternity. Regular CMEs, national and international conferences, and seminars are a part of the knowledge exchange initiatives.

My inspiration
I have seen, observed and lived Ayurveda since my childhood, seeing my parents and grandparents devoting their entire life to this science. Their dedication and sincerity to the procedures, the results and outcomes, the satisfaction of the patients; all were a source of inspiration for me.
My best memory
Event: World Ayurveda Congress, Ahmedabad in 2022. The appreciation received from Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India in the presence of thousands of dignitaries present from various nations across the globe is definitely a remarkable memory for Sreedhareeyam. In his speech, the Prime Minister mentioned the potential of Ayurveda Ophthalmology. Mr Raila Odinga, Hon’ble Ex-President of Kenya and his daughter Ms. Rosemary Odinga, who had undergone eye treatment from us were also present in the event. A special session was allotted on the spot, to speak about Ayurveda – Shalakya Tantra. I feel it as an honour for all my ancestors, gurus and mentors.
My dream
To make Ayurveda a Global Medical Science. Presently, a few countries have legally accepted Ayurveda, but not fully. It is a science of nature; it is a way of living and so it becomes all the more reasonable to be a part and parcel of everybody’s life.

My goal
A little change in the qualitative or quantitative aspects of vision will definitely bring a great change in one’s life. A smile on the patient’s face with a gratitude or satisfaction inspires us to work further. Understanding of the patient’s condition through a thorough examination, approach towards the prognosis, and protocol for diagnosis may vary from one doctor to the other. But the primary objective must be the same – to cure the patient. The use of most modern diagnostic tools and techniques along with traditional Ayurvedic treatments will definitely be appreciated by the patients across the globe.
Message to Youngsters
Modern education is giving us the best of everything. Be in the company of learned people and understand how to practise. Understand your patient before anything. Never experiment on the patient without understanding her / him.

Jammi Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd.
Vision
Our Vision is to harness modern science to actively promote Ayurveda as mainstream medicine. We aim to be the pioneers of integrative healthcare in India.
The Journey

Jammi’s Wellness Clinic owes its existence to a brilliant Ayurvedic Doctor, Dr. Jammi Venkataramanayya who started his practice way back in 1890 at Vijaynagaram, Andhra Pradesh. Dr Jammi was a Sanskrit Scholar with a strong desire and passion to serve people. He was invited to Chennai in 1927 by Dr T.S. Tirumurthy, Principal of Stanley Medical College and he set up his clinic in Chennai soon after.

The clinic started in 1949 as Jammi’s Livercure clinic and was well known for the treatment of many liver and spleen diseases for children, which was an epidemic at that time. Dr. Jammi Venkataramanayya, the founder of the company had painstakingly developed Ayurvedic formulations to tackle these diseases. Jammi’s Livercure for infantile liver disorders, Jammi’s Whooco for whooping cough and Jammi’s Nutritone for digestive disorders were few of his patented medicines.

We have been at the forefront of Ayurveda in India in the following areas: Respiratory, Digestive, Hepatic complaints and diseases, Immunity-related health problems, Hematological maladies, Stress-induced ailments, Renal function impairment, Weight-loss remedies and other common diseases. Blending science and tradition has always been synonymous with Jammi Pharmaceuticals. The directors are western-trained Ph.D.s and postdoctoral fellows with extensive experience in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. We have harmonized research methodologies of Western science with traditional Ayurvedic formulations. All our medicines are carefully formulated, processed and tested as per the guidelines. Many of our products are comprehensive blends of many whole herbs, whole roots and nanoparticles. We do not just focus on selling medicines, but we believe in going the extra mile to educate our customers and patients on how Ayurveda works, how our medicines help you, who should be taking and when & how these medicines should be taken.

Through social media, blogs and forums, we make an effort to simplify this traditional science of Ayurveda for the common man. We believe this natural and holistic age-old system of medication is not just an alternative form of treatment but is the ONLY natural way to Absolute Wellness, especially for maladies like stress, blood pressure, anxiety, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases.

My inspiration
I grew up in a family filled with Ayurvedic vaidyas. To me it felt like this is what I was meant to do. I just chose a different path to get here. I am trained in the western sciences and during my research I found that the drugs we discovered and formulated did more harm than good. It was therefore a natural segue for me to use my talents and knowledge and ply that to the Ayruvedic field.
My best memory
My great grandfather Jammi Venkataramanayya Pantulu garu once had invited a few Brahmins for his father’s shraaddha. As was the custom in those days, my great grandfather washed the feet of one of the aged Brahmins as part of the ritual. After doing so, he requested the old Brahmin to go home and rest as the food preparations would still take time. While the Brahmin went home, he quickly sent word to his son to come and meet him. He informed the old Brahmin’s son to go home and make preparations because his father had less than two hours to live as his pulse beat in his foot was very weak. Indeed, the old Brahmin passed away in less than 2 hours. Such was the genius of my great-grandfather. I feel it a privilege to be part of this legacy.
My dream
My personal vision is no different from the company’s vision. I would like to be recognized as the man who promoted the scientific aspects of Ayurveda. People should first choose Ayurveda as the preferential mode of treatment.
My Gurus:

Late Sri 1008 Vijnyananidhi Tirtha Swamiji, ex- Mathadhipathi of Sripadaraja Matha, Mulabagal, Karnataka, a master practitioner of Ayurveda

Sri 1008 Sri Satyatma Tirtha Swamiji, Mathadhipathi of Sri Uttaradi Matha

My goal
I feel that we need to encourage youngsters to take up Ayurveda as a serious discipline of study. The nation and indeed the world will benefit more from Ayurveda than any other system of medicine. We must also not shy away from answering difficult questions that the allopathic community will pose. They are coming at us from a position of insecurity as well superiority (though contradictory, it makes sense if we think about it). And we must take up the challenge to address their sincere and honest queries to the best of our abilities. I am uniquely positioned to do this due to my background in Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry. During my lifetime, I would like to see an integrative approach to healthcare.
Message to Youngsters
It may be extremely difficult to follow the dinacharya routines of Ayurveda with the present day distractions and attractions. However, it is eminently possible to do a series of small routines and practices to ensure the overall health of both the body and the environment (example – use Ayurvedic tooth powder instead of toothpaste). Likewise, use Rasayanas instead of vitamins. Spend time outdoors instead of the gym. Use ghee. Don’t worry about eating rice. Everything in moderation.
